Engage MidHudson is a New York State funded study leading to a regional sustatinability plan. This plan will inform and become part of a regional economic development plan. The sustainability plan focuses on projects that promote prosperity and environmental health and will guide future project funding. It's a great time to shine a light on your green project. Consider how your shovel ready project might fit into a regional sustainable community goal. Consider how your services might contribute to the regions green goals. Suggest ways to evolve our economic strategy to embrace ecologically positive actions.

Our region includes 7 counties: Westchester, Rockland, Ulster, Sullivan, Dutchess, Oragne, Putnam. We've got 79 days to get a plan together and need your great ideas. You can post ideas to the Engage MidHudson web site.

A Joint Presentation by Clearwater and Riverkeeper

November 30, 2011, 6:30 - 8:00 PM

Beczak Environmental Education Center
35 Alexander Street, Yonkers, NY

The public is invited to join representatives from Clearwater's Green Cities Initiative and Riverkeeper's Patrol Boat Program for presentations about water quality in the Hudson River and its tributaries, and what we can do to improve it.

The Hudson River has long defined the character and quality of life in our communities. In recent decades the Hudson has enjoyed a revival with increasing numbers of people wanting to live near it and recreate in it. However, our management of the river has not kept pace with its new role as a popular recreational destination.

Because the cities of the Hudson River Valley drive regional economic development and have high concentrations of diverse people and environmental concerns, Clearwater has developed the Green Cities Initiative. Clearwater will present its Green Cities programs, which include working with underserved communities in waterfront cities to include principles of sustainability into all phases of municipal and community planning.

For six years, Riverkeeper's Patrol Boat and its scientific partners have been testing the water for sewage contamination and reporting the findings to the public. Riverkeeper will present data from its Water Quality Testing Program, and discuss opportunities to improve public notification of sewage discharges and Hudson River water quality for safer swimming, boating and fishing.

Suggested donation of $5 to benefit Beczak Environmental Education Center. Click here for more information

hudson_river_bridgeLast week's dump of millions of gallons of raw sewage into the Hudson brought focus to some of our river's champions. ILooking for who knows about water quality in the Hudson Valley? New York Times' Mireva Navarro writes about John Lipscome and Riverkeeper in "On The Hudson, With Water Quality Mavens". Check out their Water Quality Data and Safe Recreation and User Awareness pages. Clearwater offers community outreach and hands on workshops as a method of storm water run off. NRDC's useful Testing The Waters report offers information focused primarily on bacteria count. Among The Beacon Institute's great work is the REON water quality data capture program.

clouds_300There is something really special happening this year for the Clearwater’s Great Hudson River Revival 2011. This cherished music and environmental festival traditionally takes place on the second weekend in June, this year, there is going to be a Friday night benefit concert with…Jackson Browne. Clearwater offers “With donations of $1,000 or more, your evening will begin with a waterfront reception followed by an intimate performance with Jackson Browne and an evening sail on the Hudson River. You will also receive a weekend pass to the festival along with special Clearwater gifts.”

Don't miss this great opportunity to see a Rock and Roll legend and sail the sloop Clearwater along the shores of Croton-on-Hudson.
