Bayard D. Clarkson, MD, the Enid A. Haupt Chair of Therapeutic Research at Sloan-Kettering Institute's Molecular Pharmacology and Chemistry program, has treated patients and conducted research at Memorial Sloan-Kettering for more than five decades. He holds a bachelor's degree from Yale and a medical degree from the Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons. Dr. Clarkson is a descendant of the Clarkson family who founded the Thomas S. Clarkson Memorial College of Technology in 1896, and has served on the Clarkson University Board of Trustees since 1967, including ten years as chairperson. He received an honorary doctorate from Clarkson University in 1974.
Wayne Howell, Vice President of Design and Engineering in IBM's Systems and Technology Group, has held several executive and management positions at IBM in semiconductor and systems development and intellectual property strategy. He was recognized as one of the company's top inventors with more than 50 U.S. patents. Mr. Howell earned his bachelor's degree in chemical engineering from Clarkson University, and his master's and doctoral degrees in chemical and biomolecular engineering from the University of Illinois.
Michael E. Jesanis is an advisor to companies, governments and non-profits in traditional and emerging energy fields. He is a principal of Serrafix, a firm dedicated to helping cities, together with their businesses and residents, significantly reduce energy consumption, reduce carbon footprints and improve quality of life. Mr. Jesanis is a trustee of Clarkson University, where he earned bachelors and masters degrees in mathematics. Jesanis also holds an MBA with high distinction from the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania and received an honorary doctorate from Becker College.
Mark Kastner, PE, is President of The Chazen Companies, a professional engineering, land surveying, environmental, planning and landscape architecture services firm. He currently serves on the boards of the Dutchess County Economic Development Corporation, the Council of Industry, Hudson Valley Economic Development Corporation and Hudson Valley Pattern for Progress. Kastner received his bachelor's degree in electrical and computer engineering from Clarkson University, and his master's in business administration from Union College.
Respected science journalists Horgan and Revkin to discuss technology’s future in Beacon Institute talk

BEACON, NY—Beacon Institute for Rivers and Estuaries, a subsidiary of Clarkson University, presents Andrew Revkin, author of The New York Times “Dot Earth” blog and senior fellow at Pace University, as he joins John Horgan, science journalist and director of the Center for Science Writings at Stevens Institute of Technology, to discuss technology’s future. Hudson River environmentalist John Cronin will moderate the conversation on Thursday, September 20, at 7pm at Beacon Institute’s Center for Environmental Innovation and Education at Denning’s Point in Beacon, NY.
In their talk, Horgan and Revkin—both influential science journalists responsible for sharing the most current scientific thinking with hundreds of thousands of readers each month—will explore the question of whether we have reached the beginning or the end of technology.
Andrew Revkin, who was the first New York Times reporter to file stories and photos from the North Pole, has reported on the science and politics of climate change for over 20 years. An award-winning journalist and author of three books on environmental subjects, Revkin daily engages thousands in discussions on climate, biodiversity, population and related subjects via his NY Times “Dot Earth” blog, relying on the latest in internet technology to communicate with readers.
 According to Revkin, “There is limitless potential for human minds — networked as a global community — to assess data, share ideas and think, using the power of all of our brains knitted together by the internet,” noting his optimism for a technological future.
Journalist and Stevens Institute professor John Horgan, in addition to contributing regular articles to The New York Times, Time, Newsweek, and The Washington Post, among others, also relies on internet technology to reach his audience, by writing the “Cross-check” blog for Scientific American and video chatting for Bloggingheads.tv.
Horgan views technology’s future from a different perspective. “I think right now, by far the most important technology field is energy,” states Horgan. “Obviously the technologies we have now are flawed. Enormous improvements will drastically reduce the cost of energy and also help take care of problems like global warming and other forms of pollution.”
