What good is a chicken?

Two weeks ago we asked you to make a donation to support Just Food's City Chicken Project. We talked about how much it costs to buy nails and chicken-wire other supplies and training, but then a few of you wrote back to ask - what good do chickens do? Well, we're glad you asked!
If you are considering giving $20, $50, $200 or $1000 to support the City Chicken Project, you should know that Chicken Projects provide:
Eggs!
Beautiful bird lay magnificent, bright yellow-yolked, protein-rich eggs that are distributed through our partner's food pantries, farmers' markets, CSAs and neighborhood share programs.
Pest control!
Chickens love to eat larvae, grubs, potato beetles and all manner of bugs that gardeners are forever working to keep away from their gardens.
Poop!
Rich, nutrient-laden organic material for city farmers and gardeners to compost and then use to enrich their garden beds.
Connections!
Chickens offer a surprising, intriguing, engaging way to bring in and bring together neighboring community members. For so many New Yorkers, raising chickens reconnects people with their agricultural heritage and provides a unique opportunity to bring that culture to life for younger generations.
Education!
Kids love chickens - no surprise there - and the hens provide an opportunity for children to learn about animal care, farming and where our food comes from.
