Established 1983

Boiceville, New York

Owned by Dan Leader and Sharon Burns Leader

Dan Leader began his food career when, nine months short of his undergraduate philosophy degree, he realized he needed to work with his hands as well as his mind. He enrolled at the Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park, New York, and worked as a chef for some of New York City's hottest restaurants, La Grenouille and The Water Club. After eight years of cooking food "too fancy to eat," he moved to the Catskill Mountains to fulfill his dream of opening a wood-oven fired bakery: Bread Alone was born.

Sharon Burns-Leader, who is the co-owner and pastry chef at Bread Alone Bakery, became a professional gardener after getting a degree in English from Farleigh Dickenson. In 1985, she took on the task of helping Dan build the team of people who help make Bread Alone one of the finest bakeries in the Hudson Valley.

Dan and Sharon also founded The South African Grain Bread Project that established community-based micro-bakeries to help satisfy the dietary needs of malnourished adults and children. It is also designed to encourage income generation opportunities for South Africans living with HIV/AIDS.

Bread Alone goes back to the simple, earthy European-style of baking. The bakery produces organic, wholegrain breads and all-natural, handmade pastries.

Shoppers can find Bread Alone at our Ossining Winter Farmers Market and our Park Slope Farmers Market.
