My biggest interest is the intersection of sustainability and finance. I believe that through responsible investment and finance, we can improve living standards AND make a fair profit.
Fixing the climate change problem (the biggest sustainability issue out there, followed by water), will require changing behaviors as much as changing technologies. Business, government, academia and the ordinary citizen are all part of the problem, and also key to, and part of, the solutions.
I have worked on new technology/venture capital, started businesses within and outside of large companies (thus both an entrepreneur and intrapreneur!) , been an environmental engineer, ran businesses in Europe and North America with sales all around the globe, Moved into finance in the late 1990's as the startup CEO of Innovest Strategic Value Advisors, one of the first sustainability performance rating agencies and investment research house (now part of RiskMetrics). Also spent time as a SVP with Marsh's Environmental Risk Consulting Practice, advising corporate clients on sustainability issues, risk management and financial disclosures. Started my own sustainability consulting firm, and have clients around the world. and enjoyed almost every minute of it! Have an MBA from NYU Stern School, and a MCE in Environmental Engineering and a BCE in Civil Engineering from Manhattan College. While born in New York Hospital in Manhattan in New York City, I am also a citizen of the Republic of Ireland as well as of the USA.
Besides business and sustainability, I love to ski (both downhill and cross-country), sail, hike, roller-blade, bike, travel and meet people. I have eclectic tastes in music, ranging from country to rock and roll, gregorian chant to jazz, folk music to R&B, and even an occasional show tune, all on my iPod & iPhone!
Have three great kids, Matt, Claire and Andrew, and two fantastic grand kids, Finn (4) and Neil (2), with a third on the way (all Claire's kids!).
